The Sunday Paper: New York Red Bulls

With the release of the new Red Bulls kit for 2023, I wanted to reflect on the journey that has been to get where we are today. Sometimes you have to pinch yourself in life, and for me this is one of those moments. I have a lot of affinity for the city of New York and growing up in Australia dreamed of visiting this great city and also one day living there. I have spent a lot of time in the city over the years and also had a few milestones there too, notably the launch of our Adidas collection with James Harden, the opening of our Soho store and a presentation we did a few years back at the Javits Center during New York Fashion Week. Now we can add this one to the list. I appreciate the opportunity that was given to me as a designer and us as a brand, and I can’t thank the team at Adidas and the New York Red Bulls enough. I grew up a soccer fan in Australia watching the English Premier League and the Champions League in the David Beckham era. To now having designed a kit that will be worn by a professional team on the pitch in New York City is definitely a highlight for my career as a designer and just for me personally.

There is a lot that goes into creating a kit and the process started some 18 months ago. So to now see it come to fruition after all the challenges and back and forth, I am pleased to see this jersey released and come to life for the public to enjoy. We wanted to create something different and a little bit disruptive, and I think we achieved that. The palette that we landed on pays homage to the old blue and yellow kit worn by RBNY club legends like Bradley Wright-Phillips and Thierry Henry. We took cues from yellow cabs in NYC but done in a more subdued hue that is more in line with the minimalism of our brand. The tie dye print is meant to represent the constant motion and chaos of the city that never sleeps and a nod to our old white acid tie dye that we are known for. The monogram print is a subtle nod to luxury fashion and something that speaks to our own monogram prints that we use in our brand. This is all topped off with a signature jock tag that contains the co-ordinates of the center circle of Red Bull Arena. With that all said, I can’t wait to see this on the pitch for the first time in Red Bull Arena!
