As some of you may know, I grew up in Sydney, Australia. Quite a bit far removed from the rest of the world, but an amazing place to grow up nonetheless and a beautiful one at that. When I set off for America almost 12 years ago to chase the American dream, I didn’t feel as though I would return home anytime soon. And so it happened that in the span of the past 12 years, I’ve probably spent 2 months or less in my homeland and up until last July hadn’t been home for almost 8 years. As I reflect on things as I mature and grow as a person, I don’t regret the decision I made to immigrate to the States, but I do regret not having spent more time back home. And this is one of my new year’s resolutions - to be closer to my homeland and my family and friends. Regret is not a way I like to put it because the journey is what it is and has shaped me into who I am today. You can’t change the past, but you sure as hell have an opportunity to shape the present and the future. Sometimes it’s easy to forget where you come from, but reflecting on that I still am an Aussie at heart, albeit I have definitely adopted some Americanisms which is understandable seeing as though I am now a duel citizen. America is home to me, but Australia will always be home to me as well. The thing I love and miss about Australia is its beautiful beaches and laid back lifestyle and just being around family and friends. Great coffee, great food, great weather (sometimes) and friendly people. It is also very clean and very safe, not to mention we are a sports mad country which definitely had an impact on me as a person and as a designer. It’s what makes luxury sport make so much sense to my core. There’s a lot to love about Australia for sure, and I was so happy to return home this past year after that aforementioned 8 year hiatus. I look forward to going back in a few short months and plant some more seeds of growth and put down a DP flag in my homeland.
To be able to share where I’m from with my wife and kids was a highlight for me this past year, and I want them to experience more of their Australian side. Last year’s visit was in winter also, which I wasn’t mad at because the footy was in full swing and being a bit cooler allows for more wardrobe options that is for sure. A home base in Sydney to go back to more often is definitely a goal of mine into the future, and this year more regular trips there will satiate that desire as well. I can’t forget where I come from, as it definitely played a large role in who I am today. I definitely feel blessed to have been brought up there, and although I call America home, I still call Australia home in my heart.
