The Sunday Paper: Cybertruck

The Cybertruck is an interesting product. I think it is pure genius in more ways than just the obvious. The level of attention to detail and thought that has been put into it is noticeable. There’s a simplicity to it as well, which I love, and harkens back to the likes of Apple and my own design philosophy of artistry and simplicity. This car is so recognizable that it is un-branded yet the whole world knows it is a Tesla product. That is one part to the genius. The genius being in the marketing. I think this vehicle stands as a design marvel on one hand and on the other a pure marketing genius. For me, it works.  You see this amazing machine and perhaps you can’t get one right away, but you buy into the other products of the Tesla brand. I think this car will sell more Model 3's and Model Y’s than it will sell itself.

The Sunday Paper: Cybertruck

I think of this approach in my own brand. The hero products we as a brand sell very few of come at a higher price and a high amount of time and effort in production are what help to make the other products we sell that are our bread and butter. The hero items are as much marketing and merchandising for the entry level products like our basics and our Surplus line. The things we wear everyday. Now I don’t go about designing something wild and crazy merely to sell my other products, but when I think of what I would wanna wear and how I envision our products like the Standard Tees and Venice Trunks being worn, I merchandise these together in my head. These are our Model Y’s and Model 3’s to give an analogy. Beautiful and simplistic in design yet more practical on a day-to-day basis. The Cybertruck will make Tesla some money, yes, but their bread and butter is the millions of Model Y's and Model 3's they will sell. I think having the guts to see such a beautiful product through from not just a concept vehicle but to reality has made me an even bigger fan of the brand and makes me understand how that same philosophy like this can be applied to any area of design, especially in my own work. Enjoy your Sunday!
